A celebration of the colour red, one of the first colours used by artists dating back to prehistory. From orange tinges to deep wine hues, red is all around us. We see it in birds and beetles, leaves and fruits, lava and sunsets, and throughout history it has held significance for cultures around the world.

When you sketch outdoors, whether for exploring or information gathering, that sensory experience gives your drawings an immediacy and energy that is always appealing. In this course we will used an array of media and techniques and will take our inspiration from the Nature in Art site.
Each participant will choose their own preferred subjects – perhaps birds, butterflies or dragonflies, their habitats, or even the static sculptures in the grounds. We will use line, tone and texture to explore structure, proportion and movement, before looking at how to develop sketches into more finished (realistic or abstract) artwork.

My intuitive art workshops aim to give you creative confidence. Providing a nurturing, fun and relaxing space in which you can enjoy the process of creating mixed media artworks. Allowing you to enjoy the creative process, to let go, creating spontaneously, without thinking, without trying to draw precise shapes, trusting your instinct rather than your brain.
Intuitive art is about letting go of fear or expectations, allowing each painting to evolve in its own time, in its own way, allowing something new and unknown emerge. We will be experimenting with lots of different techniques and materials, to include acrylics, acrylic pouring medium, encaustic art, pastels, inks, pencils and more.
I will guide you in the application of each medium and technique, ensuring this workshop is suitable for those that are new to art as well as those that are more experienced. The day will start and end with a short guided meditation. No experience necessary!

This course will focus on botanical drawing and painting techniques in the option of working in watercolour or gouache. Observational skills are a very important part of botanical art so students will be encouraged to work from life by making detailed studies from either plants, leaves, fruit or vegetable specimens.
Course tutor Simon Williams will advise on a practical one-to-one basis, giving guidance in observations, colours suggestions and how to paint from the initial base coats to more controlled techniques. This will include rendering textures, contour definitions and colour transitions. Gouache is an opaque form of watercolour and is not an inferior medium to watercolour. For much of the time it is used for illustration, book design and publishing for its fantastic reproduction and vibrant colour.
This course is open to all levels, but it is preferential to have some drawing/painting experience as botanical work requires a precise rather than loose style of painting. Please visit the tutor’s website to see samples for the style of painting.
