Course Description:
When is ink not ink? When it’s Acrylic Ink (it’s liquid acrylic paint, not ink). Explore this fascinating medium, which adds a whole new dimension to your acrylic practice. Discover the vibrant colours – glossy, iridescent, shimmering, pearlescent – and explore when and how to use. them in realistic and abstract art. We will experiment with different methods of applying the ink and cover working with layers of colour, wet into wet, detail and usage with other media. No prior knowledge of working with acrylic inks is necessary.
Materials Required:
• Acrylic Inks: Jackie will bring inks for the whole group, so there will be a materials charge of around £7 per person on the day. You are very welcome to bring your own inks too if you already own any.
• Palette: The ceramic daisy type are good and easy to clean. Or a plastic palette with a lot of small wells (NB: Inserts from boxes of chocolates can make good disposable palettes).
• Brushes: Don’t use expensive sables. Nylon brushes are best: I prefer to use filberts or the flat, square shapes. A selection of sizes and shapes (including a rigger or sword liner) are useful, though one large flat and one small detail brush will suffice if you’re on a budget. Jackie will bring some spares for students to use.
• Supports: Stretched watercolour paper OR a watercolour pad OR a watercolour block. A CP/Not (e.g. slightly textured) surface is best. Several A4 or A3 pieces will be better than one large. Jackie will also bring mountboard off-cuts for you to practice on.
• Water Pot
• Small spray bottle for water: The sort sold in chemists for travellers
• Sponge: The car wash type.
• Ruling Pen: Only if you already have one. No need to buy one specially.

Course Description:
This two day course will show you how to sketch the landscapes and architecture of Gloucestershire with waterproof black ink pen and watercolour wash. Using photos supplied by Jonathan you will be shown how to use pen with watercolour paint both before and after painting. Techniques taught will include colour mixing, brush technique, light and dark, drawing with pen and how to loosen up to achieve expressive sketches. By the end of the course you will have produced a few sketches to take home with you.
Materials Required:
Materials will be provided at a cost of £25. per person, payable. to Jonathan during the course.
Should students wish to use their own tools and. materials rather than buying a set from the tutor then they are very welcome to bring them along.

Course Description:
This course will explore the techniques involved in producing realistic and lifelike drawings of birds using coloured pencils.
You will look at how to capture the iridescence seen in certain bird feathers, as well as the textures and patterns of your own choice of bird subjects.
Materials Required:
• Reference photos or sketches of particular subjects that inspire you.
• Cartridge paper, pencils and tracing paper to create and transfer your initial drawing.
• Drawing paper (Andrew’s personal favourites are 250gsm Bristol Board or Clairefontaine Pastelmat which can be purchased from www.saa.co.uk
• A good selection of coloured pencils
Artist’s Profile:
Andrew has been associated with Nature in Art for over twenty years. During this time he has run numerous courses and been an annual artist in residence. As a professional artist he works in a variety of media, including coloured pencil, graphite pencil, pastels and Chromacolour acrylics. He has recently published three art techniques books, featuring drawing birds, painting birds and drawing tigers.

Course Description:
Working in black & white and colour, this course will explore different ways of depicting trees in lino prints. You will be looking at different approaches for trees in leaf and bare trees, as well as stylised designs.
The course will look at how to use colour in your work and how to register your prints so that you can add different layers. A variety of different inking techniques will be taught.
You will be given guidance in how to adjust your designs for the printmaking process. Samples of different types of lino will be available to try and participants will be able to see the subtle difference these can make to the final outcome. You will be guided at every stage of the process and you should finish the course with a number of finished prints.
Materials Required:
Most materials will be provided but please bring:
- Pencil
- Paper
- Ruler
- Apron/old clothes
Please bring some images to work from, in the form of photos or sketches. You will be working on A5 blocks, unless you are a very experienced lino cutter, in which case you may choose to work on A4.
The cost of materials for the two days will be £10.
Artist’s Profile:
Beth Jenkins is an experienced artist and tutor. Her love of the natural world is shown in her landscape prints, often of trees and water. Following her residency at Slimbridge, birds are now becoming a regular feature of her work.
Beth is a member of Gloucestershire Printmaking Co-operative. Her work was selected for the inaugural Masters of Relief Print Exhibition by the Royal Society of the Painter Printmakers. She exhibits widely in the UK and beyond and has work in private collections in the UK, Europe and North America.

Course Description:
This course will cover a basic understanding of. materials and acrylic painting techniques needed to complete a landscape painting working from a reference photo provided by the tutor. The next stage will be to study aerial and linear perspective, techniques needed to paint skies and colour mixing to create depth in the landscape. All the way through the course Nick will lead the painting and provide plenty of individual guidance leading to completing a finished landscape on a canvas panel by the end of the course.

Nick has been teaching acrylics and watercolour for approximately 30 years. He provides workshops and demonstrations for art societies and hold regular workshops at Dumbledon Hall Hotel. Nick regularly sells work. in exhibitions and is a member of TWASI (The Wildlife Art Society International)

Course Description:
Capturing drama in art is the secret to its success – harnessing lowlights, highlights and texture help create mood as well as realism. For this workshop Cath will take students on a journey that focuses on these important elements.
Each student will complete a beautiful and detailed graphite sketch of a solitary bee.
Students will also learn about the fascinating life cycle of solitary bees, that make up 90% of the UK’s collective bee species. About how solitary bees make much more effective pollinators than both honey bees and bumble bees and how creating habitat and nesting sites and material for solitary bees is easy and fun to do…involving anything from rotten wood to empty snail shells!

Cath Hodsman, AMRSB, is a Cotswolds-based artist and illustrator who is one the the country’s foremost natural-history artists. Her passion and specialism is painting and sketching insects, which she has done for the last 10 years. In order to pay homage to their hidden beauty, she aims for 100% anatomical accuracy in every artistic study she produces. Through her scientific approach to her work, she has been made an Associate Member of the prestigious Royal Society of Biology. She is also well known for her ever-popular and unique insect painting and sketching course – With these she has taught with the illustrious London’s Natural History Museum, The Royal West of England Academy, The Royal Horticultural Society, The Royal Botanic Gardens (Kew), The Field Studies Council, as well as many other relevant , esteemed artistic and natural history clientage and venues; including The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace.

Course Description:
This course is a wonderful introduction to the world of coloured pencil techniques. Learn the art of layering and blending coloured pencil whilst using different pencil strokes to create the textures required for the subject. A line drawing to trace will be provided for those not wishing to draw free hand.

Karen is a self taught award winning coloured pencil artist and tutor, painting mostly wildlife subjects. She is a gold member of the UKCPS (United Kingdom Coloured Pencil Society).
She exhibits nationally and has won many awards for her detailed pencil work. She runs regular courses in the Pencil Museum, Keswick and Nature in Art, as well as many classes in Hampshire where she currently lives.

Course Description:
This is a course for all abilities who have an interest in learning, to paint wildflowers, plants and weeds in their natural habitat.
It could be a corner of a garden which inspires you, a field full of wildflowers, a landscape, anywhere where plants live in their natural habitat and are in their abundance. Anywhere, where their energy and beauty dominate the landscape and where the human footprint is at a minimum.
Materials Required:
Participants will need to bring their own tools and materials to work with including paint brushes, their chosen medium (either gouache, acrylic or oil paint) and ground (paper, board or canvas). Participants must also bring in photographs of what they wish to paint.
Artist’s Profile:
Ros has been painting the natural world for decades. Her aim through her work is to combine truth to the real plants and places, combined with the variety and energy found there.
She is drawn to complex plant relationships where they grow naturally in the wild. It is their beauty and uniqueness that inspires her.

Course Description:
A relaxing and fun filled day creating loose abstract floral paintings with sublimation inks and then heat pressing them onto fabrics.
Working from life you will spend the morning creating interesting fluid floral paintings. The paint acts like ink and watercolour and so will blend and disperse in a very magical way. You will be taught how to create quick, loose and free abstract florals which can also be applied to other subjects.
In the afternoon you will experiment with transferring these images onto fabric, using a heat press and irons. You will be able to take your fabrics home to frame, to work on further with embellishment or simply use the day as a chance to unwind and learn something new.
This is an ideal class for the complete beginner (in both painting and sublimation inks), it’s also ideal for painters who want a chance to free up their painting and try abstraction.
What is taught in this class can easily be carried on at home without the need for high tech equipment.
Materials Required:
Christina will provide the required materials for an additional charge of £15 per participant to be paid to Christina on the day of the course. This will include a little selection of inks to carry on using at home.
If possible please bring two jam jars for water
Artist’s Profile:
Christina is an abstract artist based in Gloucester. Inspired by the natural world she works with inks and paints to create layers of translucent colours resulting in soothing and relaxing art.
Christina has had lots of experience in the arts and running workshops and at one stage was even the Education Officer here at Nature in Art.
She has exhibited work on the London underground, Saatchi Art and is represented by Wychwold Art Gallery. She had a pop up shop in John Lewis and produced artwork for Gloucestershire Hospital to improve their mental health in Crisis room.
