On this 1-day course you will learn how to needle-felt with wool.
You will be introduced to the basics of needle-felting, taught how to make a wire armature to form the basis of your sculpture and how to mould the wool to the frame.
You will be amazed how the wool sculpture seems to develop a character of its own. Once you have become confident in using the basic skills and techniques you are only limited by your imagination!

Michelle taught herself needle-felting and, for several years now, has been selling sculptures and commissions of her animals all over the world, as well as running courses and workshops.

Explore the mysteries behind the Collagraph Print on this 1-day course.
Learn how to make your own unique prints from plates created from mount card, which is incised with lines, collaged with paper and other textured mediums to create an exciting textured printing surface.
You will be shown how to prepare paper and how to ink up and wipe your plates ready for printing. The first part of the course will be spent making the plate and then the second will be spent printing in different ways to create your own unique print.

Tor is a prize winning printmaker, who shows her work both nationally and internationally. Tor is interested in experimenting with new techniques, images and printing methods which allows her to challenge the boundaries of printmaking and enables her to produce the right marks and textures that relate to each subject matter.
Tor worked as a Printmaking tutor and technician at UCA, Maidstone, Kent, after finishing her degree. She later returned to achieve an Masters in Printmaking in 2010.
She now runs her own private printmaking courses from her studio in Worcestershire.

This 2-day course will show you how to draw colourful bird portraits with coloured pencil.
Using photographs supplied by the tutor you will be shown how to draw eyes, feathers and bright colours using techniques such as blending, layering, colour mixing and shading. Each exercise will be demonstrated step by step and the tutor will be on hand to provide group and individual constructive criticism.
By the end of the course you will have produced a few bird portraits to take home.

On this 2-day course you will carefully study a natural object of your choice (seeds, leaves, shells etc) to pick out the shapes, forms, lines and textures occurring within it. You will then carve this form in lime wood, either in a representational or more abstract way. You may bring an object you have found either from home, on a walk or in the gardens at Nature in Art.
Robert will also provide a range of objects for reference but it is always good to work from something that you have been specifically drawn to yourself. Preliminary sketches in pencil and/or models in plasticine, depending on your abilities, will aid your 2 and 3 dimensional understanding of the object before starting in wood.

Graphite pencil can be used to produce so much more than just a sketch.
Jamie will show participants that whether or not you are using a pencil that is blunt or sharp, pressing lightly or hard, or using a variety of tones, that the effect of fur, the texture of skin and the glassy look of an eye can be achieved.

This 1-day course will allow you to explore the art of bookbinding, as you make a journal using a Japanese Butterfly binding, which is suitable for artists and calligraphers alike to use.
This book opens completely flat and you will be able to make any size or shape, with a mix of different weight or surface papers and you may even wish to incorporate pockets or fold-outs.
The cover is a simple wrap-style and can be soft or hard-backed.

Josie is also running another course to accompany this one, which will take place on Sunday 4th December. On that course you can learn the art of Calligraphy and begin to fill your hand-bound journal with colourful ‘Mouse Roman’ script.

Landscapes in Glass @ Nature in Art

This 2-day course gives a taster of two techniques for creating images on glass. On day 1 you will learn several methods of applying enamels to glass, including monoprinting with natural materials.
You will be able to create a dish or tile, enamelled with your own design
inspired by your favourite landscape or wildlife image. Picture2
You will also create an enamel background which will come in handy on day 2, when, using a glass engraving drill and a variety of tools, you will learn basic engraving techniques. You will discover how to create a 3D effect using all sides of your glass and go away with a masterpiece of your own making!

Please note: enamelled pieces will need to be fired in the kiln – as many as possible will be fired overnight ready for day 2, but if space becomes limited you may need to collect some of your work from Nature in Art at a later date.

Artist’s Profile
Amanda Lawrence has been working with glass for over 20 years. She specialises in kiln formed and engraved glass, often combining the two. Her wildlife and landscape inspired vessels, sculptures and wall pieces are regularly featured in exhibitions around the country and she also works to commission.
She is a member of the Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen and the Society of Designer Craftsmen and a Fellow of the Guild of Glass Engravers.
She has considerable experience of teaching both engraving and kiln techniques and enjoys passing on the pleasure of glass making to other people.
