The world is in climate and ecological crisis, not least because of what has become known as ecocide (large-scale systematic destruction of the natural living world) which is legally permitted. Current regulations simply do not stop the harm. The co-founder of StopEcocide, PollyHiggins, believed that the most effective way to see this trend reversed is to make ecocide an international crime, a proposal she presented to the UN Law Commission in 2010. Polly, an eminent lawyer who sadly died last Easter Sunday, spent the last decade making the word ‘ecocide’ globally understood by giving talks, advising governments and making documentaries. Along the way she inspired thousands, from parliamentarians to ecologists and from lawyers to artists. Her vision lives on and has more momentum than ever. Come and hear about this radical and innovative approach which could do for all life on earth what the criminalisation of genocide has done for vulnerable minorities: provide protection where none existed before.This talk complements our exhibition ‘Hit List’ that focuses on the theme of extinction. A weekend course painting a variety of water themed images in acrylics. We will look at how to paint stormy seas and flat calm lakes and play with the different technical approaches in creating them. We will focus on reflections, tones and detail, all those areas which help portray water convincingly.

On average, one elephant is poached in the wild every 26-minutes. This is the shocking statistic at the heart of Explorers Against Extinction, a conservation charity committed to raising awareness about threats to world wildlife and wild spaces while also raising significant funds to safeguard them. The charity’s innovative Sketch for Survival art initiative has funded frontline projects from Zimbabwe to Sumatra. Join Trustee Robert Ferguson as he explores how art inspires positive action and offers first-hand insight from the frontline of conservation, including the deployment of anti-poaching dogs and the evolving role of technology.

A celebration of the colour red, one of the first colours used by artists dating back to prehistory. From orange tinges to deep wine hues, red is all around us. We see it in birds and beetles, leaves and fruits, lava and sunsets, and throughout history it has held significance for cultures around the world.

We will do 4 paintings over the weekend. One for each session. Landscape and beachscape to a specific basic composition which you will be required to draw out for yourselves from a sketch which I will provide and help with if needed. We will explore creating the feeling of distance and light in a painting by lying down successive washes, using ‘wet into wet’ techniques and light and shade to produce depth. Possible seasonal themes will be autumn colours and mists, winter snow, sunsets, big skies, trees and reflections. We will go through each painting stage by stage and I will advise and assist where required.

Capturing drama in art is the secret to its success – harnessing lowlights, highlights and texture help create mood as well realism. For this workshop, Cath will take students on a journey that focuses on these important elements.
Each student will complete a beautiful and detailed graphite sketch of a Solitary bee.
Students will also learn about the fascinating life cycle of solitary bees, that make up 90% of the UK’s collective bee species. About how solitary bees make much more effective pollinators than both honey bees and bumble bees and how creating habitat and nesting sites and material for solitary bees is easy and fun to do….involving anything from rotten wood to empty snail shells….!

On this 2 day course participants will master the fast drying time of acrylic paint, tackle details and a variety of textures found in nature and leave with a better grasp of this very versatile medium. Everyone will be encouraged to enjoy experimenting with brushes and sponges and the techniques Kim uses in her own paintings.
This course will appeal to those who are looking to establish a good understanding of using acrylics to capture wildlife subjects and who have already tried acrylics and want to learn more. Kim is a considerate and encouraging tutor and will bring a relaxed approach to the two days.

These little garden bird mosaics are designed to interact with their environment, reflecting and refracting light so that they change throughout the day.
On this one day workshop you will produce a stained glass mosaic bird on a stalk to brighten up your garden. You will be able to make a bird of your choice from a limited selection of shapes. Skills covered on the course will include mapping out of your original design, basic glass cutting, stained glass mosaic techniques, and grouting techniques. This course is suitable for all levels although glass cutting skills are a bonus.
