On this 2-day course you will learn all about working with graphite pencil from experienced artist Jamie Boots.
Graphite pencil can be used to produce so much more than just a sketch.
Jamie will show participants that. whether or not you are using a pencil that is blunt or sharp, pressing lightly or hard, or using a variety of tones, the realistic texture of skin, fur and the glassy look of an eye can be achieved.
Add impact to your paintings with this acrylics course that focuses on the big and the bold. Imagine the piercing stare of a Golden Eagle: how much more powerful would it be on a giant scale? Or channel your inner O’Keefe with flowers that command attention. We will concentrate on a single part of an animal, bird or plant, working much larger than life size in most cases. Learn about scaling up a drawing, texture, composition, balance, colour and adjusting for scale. Discover the fun and freedom that comes from working on a larger scale. Suitable for anyone wanting to discover acrylics, or existing acrylics fans wanting to add to their skills.
Inspired by the decorative works of the golden age of illustration and the Arts and Crafts movement, this course will show you how to include gold-leaf with your paintings. It can be used very versatile, either to highlight small areas of your paintings, or bring glow to the complete background. Gold-leaf is a stunning and decorative way to bring a surprising new element and shine to your work.
This course is suitable for absolute beginners as well as advanced participants, but please be aware that working with gold leaf, which comes in thin, fragile sheets, is painstakingly fiddly: you need to bring patience!!
An illustrated talk by wildlife photographer Michael Leach
Michael tells of his time high in the forest with the mountain gorillas of Rwanda,gathering first-hand material for his book – Faces in the Mirror. There are now only around 800 individuals left on earth – here we meet an entire family group, from new born baby to the silverback. He explains how to get close to these charismatic characters and demonstrates how to communicate with the gentle, intelligent primates that we have pushed to the edge of extinction. Michael has worked all his life in nature photography. His stunning images have been used in over 80countries and published in over 1000 books.

Another Beastly Art exhibition features woodcut prints by Nat Morley, jewellery by Hazel Morris and ceramics and textiles by Jane Vernon.All three are Gloucestershire based artists inspired by nature and, in particular, animals.In this show they say ‘animals abound, plants proliferate, and scenery scintillates!’
Energy, improvisation, gesture, spontaneity and chance are all characteristics of the Monotype / Monoprint. This two day workshop will give participants the opportunity to further their experience and skills in printmaking.
This course is aimed at artists that wish to develop and improve however beginners very are welcomed
As well as group demonstrations each participant will receive individual tuition.
The Monotype / Monoprint is the most painterly and responsive of all printmaking techniques. It is a process that can be explored at home or in the studio without great investment or need for space.
Participants are invited to bring any sketchbooks or source material of their own, however this is not a requirement.
Artist quality materials will be provided.
This subject contains endless possibilities for creating sculptures in clay that feature toads, frogs or even newts and salamanders. It could be toads peeping out from under a mossy log (‘ toads in the hole’!), a newt crawling out of an old rusty paint tin or frogs among fungi or sitting on the rim of a pitcher plant. Anything goes! In this two day ceramic workshop, students will be encouraged to use their imagination to place this genre of wildlife in any situation of their choosing. The emphasis is on creating a good level of realism and I will demonstrate how this can be achieved.
A variety of illustrations, artefacts and natural objects will be available as examples and inspiration and drawing materials will be provided to help students to sketch their ideas initially. At the end of the course I will take the work home to my studio in York to dry our prior to glazing and firing. Students may specify any colours they would like applied to their sculpture. The fired and finished work will be available to collect from Nature in Art from Tuesday 21st May.

This course is a wonderful introduction to the world of coloured pencil techniques. Learn the art of layering and blending Derwent Coloursoft Pencils whilst using different pencil strokes to create the textures required for the subject. All materials will be supplied including a line drawing to trace for those not wishing to draw free hand.
