On this 2 day course you will learn all about working with graphite pencil from experienced artist Jamie Boots.
Graphite pencil can be used to produce so much more than just a sketch.
Jamie will show participants that whether or not you are using a pencil that is blunt or sharp, pressing lightly or hard, or using a variety of tones, that the effect of fur, the texture of skin and the glassy look of an eye can be achieved.

Art Course

This 1-day course will allow you to explore the art of bookbinding, as you make a journal using a Japanese Butterfly binding, which is suitable for artists and calligraphers alike to use.
This book opens completely flat and you will be able to make any size or shape, with a mix of different weight or surface papers and you may even wish to incorporate pockets or fold-outs.
The cover is a simple wrap-style and can be soft or hard-backed.
Josie is also running another course to accompany this one, which will take place on Sunday 4th December. On that course you can learn the art of Calligraphy and begin to fill your hand-bound journal with colourful ‘Mouse Roman’ script.

This 1-day course will allow you to explore the art of Calligraphy.
Josie will introduce you to the ‘Mouse Roman’ script. It is quick and easy to learn and can be done in large or small formats. It is also fun and lighthearted – great for greetings cards too.
You will have time to explore your own creativity both on paper or within a book you bring along that you wish to personalise.
Josie is also running another course to accompany this one, which will take place on Saturday 3rd December. On that course you can learn the art of bookbinding and create your own unique hand-bound journal which you could then use on this course, if you so wished.

Art Course
with Amanda Lawrence 10am – 5pm

This 2-day course gives a taster of two techniques for creating images on glass. On day 1 you will learn several methods of applying enamels to glass, including monoprinting with natural materials.
You will be able to create a dish or tile, enamelled with your own design
inspired by your favourite landscape or wildlife image. 
You will also create an enamel background which will come in handy on day 2, when, using a glass engraving drill and a variety of tools, you will learn basic engraving techniques. You will discover how to create a 3D effect using all sides of your glass and go away with a masterpiece of your own making!
Please note: enamelled pieces will need to be fired in the kiln – as many as possible will be fired overnight ready for day 2, but if space becomes limited you may need to collect some of your work from Nature in Art at a later date.

Amanda Lawrence has been working with glass for over 20 years. She specialises in kiln formed and engraved glass, often combining the two. Her wildlife and landscape inspired vessels, sculptures and wall pieces are regularly featured in exhibitions around the country and she also works to commission.
She is a member of the Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen and the Society of Designer Craftsmen and a Fellow of the Guild of Glass Engravers.
She has considerable experience of teaching both engraving and kiln techniques and enjoys passing on the pleasure of glass making to other people.

Energy, improvisation, gesture, spontaneity and chance are all characteristics of the Monotype / Mono-print. They are the most painterly and responsive of all printmaking techniques. It is a process that can be explored at home or in the studio without great investment or need for space.
This 2-day course will give participants the
opportunity to further their experience and skills in printmaking.
As well as group demonstrations each
participant will receive individual tuition.
This course is aimed at artists that wish to
develop and improve, however beginners can be accommodated.

Artist’s Profile Nik Pollard is a painter, printmaker and illustrator. His work stems from a passion for the natural world and is generated from sustained, direct observation.
He has participated in national and international art projects highlighting the importance and vulnerability of specific habitats and wildlife in support of conservation.
His work has led to collaborations with schools, colleges, galleries and museums,
engaging communities with the natural environment through residencies and
workshops.

This one-day workshop which will introduce you to Sumi-e, the ancient art of creating Japanese ink pictures, or Japanese brush painting. Traditionally, these paintings feature subjects from the natural world such as flowers and birds. The Japanese experience painting as a form of meditation that brings peace and harmony to the artist and the finished pieces are intended to inspire the same sense of tranquillity and joy in the viewer. This practical course will help you master all the techniques you’ll need to create striking paintings and discover the spiritual aspects of this unique art form.

Artist’s Profile Taku is a well known Japanese painter and artist. Born in Tokyo he is a long standing friend of Nature in Art. He has travelled to various regions of Japan and, in support of environmental protection activities, painted the nature in Japan that he hopes will be left untouched. Now, he is working vigorously to introduce traditional Japanese culture to foreign countries and to share it with others.
He also was awarded the “Japan Society Award 2014 for making significant contributions in the field of UK Japan relations.
Art Course
with Joanna Dewfall 10am – 5pm

Day One
You will learn about the various mosaic materials and techniques of cutting and setting. You will make a 25cmsq panel on board on the first (or only) day.
Day Two
You will make a 30cmsq mosaic slab for the garden on a concrete paver. The tutor will assist you to make sure you have a simple bold design to mosaic. The tutor has templates available to use if need be. You will mosaic the design in reverse during the day and, if complete in time, the tutor will assist you to set the design in cement adhesive on the paver. The tutor has run this workshop numerous times and everyone always leaves with a completed paver. However, if a student has not finished the mosaic in time they can take away a paver and adhesive to fix at home. Grouting will be demonstrated but you will need to complete this at home – grout and full instructions included. Please note the concrete pavers are not suitable to be transported home on a bicycle!

Join Making Needle Felted Animals author Sophie Buckley, who will guide you through creating a needle felt garden bird using a special barbed needle and colourful merino wool. Learn about needle felt tools and materials, techniques including shaping, surface colouring, adding legs, facial details, symmetry and how to make the bird look realistic, as well as display ideas. You can choose to create any garden bird such as robin, blue tit, wren, magpie, woodpecker etc.
You will receive needle felt tools to take away, as well as lots of inspiration for your next projects!
Needle felt kits, supplies and signed copies of the book will be available on the day.

Artist’s Profile During her degree in Contemporary Crafts at Falmouth University, Sophie Buckley found that as well as enjoying the process of creating, she also enjoyed sharing creative skills with others. After completing a course in workshop facilitation she moved to the Gloucestershire area where she met local creative Steffi Stern, and they have worked together ever since, writing the book Making Needle Felted Animals together which came out in 2015, and have created a business based around the book called The Makerss, through which they are able to share with others their enthusiasm for making, love of natural materials, and creative skills.
