Hear from Ben, an Independence Trust client, who has recently returned from volunteering in the Mapesu wildlife reserve in South Africa. Ben had never been to Africa and was very anxius about it all but with support and encouragement from the trust he took the plunge, had a really memorable experience learning about the wildlife, and gained many useful practical skills.

Mary worked at Cheltenham Art Gallery and Museum, is a writer on the Arts and Crafts Movement and Chairman of the Gloucestershire Guild of Craftsmen. Come and hear her talk about the importance of nature and the countryside to the Movement in the Cotswolds focusing on the likes of William Morris, Ernest Gimson and C R Ashbee. A facinating evening!
This talk coincides with our exhibition of work by Eric Ennion, a remarkable all-round naturalist who was one of the 20th century’s most talented and original wildlife artists. Field Sketch: an inspiring wildlife encounter, seized and committed to paper. This talk explores the history, importance and role of field sketching, as artists seek to interpret and communicate their experiences of wildlife. An inspiring evening of art and places for all. One of our most popular events, the annual craft fair at Nature in Art has become well known as a source for unique, individually hand crafted gifts, offered to you directly by the crafts people who made them.
Many of the makers will be demonstrating so you will be able to see just how your unique gift was created.
The range of quality gifts you will find at the craft fair includes woodturning, jewellery, ceramics, textile items, as well as stained glassware, metal work, paper crafts and much more. With such a wide selection you are bound to find the perfect gift for your friends and family, or even treat yourself!
During the weekend as well as watching demonstrations from the craft workers, and purchasing gifts, you can also view most of the museum galleries.
You may also be a winner on the raffle or tombola, so make sure you purchase a ticket. There will be a separate raffle on the Saturday and Sunday.
An illustrated talk by Simon Trapnell. Our 2016 exhibition CROWD focused on some of the wonderful objects in our collection. Now that we are in our 30th anniversary year, tonight we look afresh at some of the paintings and original prints that have been added to our collection or borrowed from other collections since we opened. Personal thoughts and stories behind amazing works. An art based talk for everyone, even those who wonder whether art is for them at all! Tickets include a finger buffet.
An evening of carols, festive music and words with one of the three choirs led by Monika Murrel. Preceded by festive snacks, mince pies and mulled wine. Part of the proceeds to help the homeless.
In the 1960’s, Born Free captured the world’s imagination with the story of Elsa, an orphaned lioness who was taken in by George and Joy Adamson and returned to a life in the wild. The book and film sparked a new love of nature but the true story of what happened afterwards was far more tragic as both George and Joy were murdered. This drama documentary re-lives those events. Nature in Art has held a number of events in support of Elsa Trust and Born Free. Representatives from Elsa Trust will be present on the night and a few of Joy Adamson’s original paintings will be on show.

Fat Kangeroos to Jumbo’s Blues, working with David Attenborough to tell stories from the past. Stephen is the managing director and creative director of Humble Bee Films and a former BBC producer who worked with Chris Parsons, a former trustee of Nature in Art, at the world famous Natural History Unit. Dunleavy’s credits include David Attenborough’s Life in the Undergrowth, Saving Planet Earth, Natural World and more recently Little Prairie Dogs for CBeebies channel.

Darren Rees received the Artist in Residency honour from the Firends of the Scott Polar Research Institute, travelling to the Antarctic Peninsula. Come and hear him talk about his adventure and the creation of the works in his exhibition in the museum, most of which were produced in situ. Darren is widely travelled, a regular visitor to the Arctic and a council member of the Society of Wildlife Artists.

Mandy has been a professional wildlife artist for over 30 years and is the daughter of David Shepherd. This evening is a rare opportunity to hear personal anecdotes and tales about David and his art, her own early life and influences from her father all interwoven with her own story. Supported by film, this will be an evening to celebrate David’s amazing life and legacy, expressed partly through Mandy’s own endeavours.
Mandy also is well known for her portraiture and military work. After her degree, she travelled to Africa to work in Zambia, Zimbabwe, and South Africa which culminated in her first exhibition in Zimbabwe in 1980.
