Join Making Needle Felted Animals author Sophie Buckley, who will guide you through creating a needle felt hedgehog using a special barbed needle and soft natural wool. Learn about needle felt tools and materials, techniques including shaping, adding legs, using a special spiky fabric, facial details, symmetry and how to make the hedgehog look realistic, as well as display ideas.
You will receive needle felt tools to take away, as well as lots of inspiration for your next projects!

Artist’s Profile During her degree in Contemporary Crafts at Falmouth University, Sophie Buckley found that as well as enjoying the process of creating, she also enjoyed sharing creative skills with others. After completing a course in workshop facilitation she moved to the Gloucestershire area where she met local creative Steffi Stern, and they have worked together ever since, writing the book Making Needle Felted Animals together which came out in 2015, and have created a business based around the book called The Makerss, through which they are able to share with others their enthusiasm for making, love of natural materials, and creative skills.

Wildflower meadows look complicated and difficult to paint. My aim in this course is to show an easy way to construct a meadow, making it look natural, through layering the different grasses and flowers. The painting should achieve spacial depth, energy and variety of species.

Artist’s Profile ‘I have been painting the natural world for decades. My aim through my work is to combine truth to the real plants and places, combined with the variety and energy that is found there. I have moved from painting single flowers to garden borders and meadows. I am now painting paths which are leading me out of the meadows into the landscape’. A very experienced tutor Rosalind’s work is familiar to visitors to Nature in Art, not least her giant ‘flower cycle’, often on display on the stairs.

Vibrant or subtle colours, thin like watercolours or thick like oils, quick drying and lightfast; acrylics are endlessly versatile. Suitable for all abilities, this course will give participants the opportunity to try different methods of applying the paint, creating a variety of effects. We will explore texture, detail, blending, glazing, scumbling and impasto, leading to participants making informed choices in future work.

Materials List Acrylic Paints I prefer Liquitex, Sennelier or Golden but almost any make will do. Avoid any make that gives huge tubes for very little money, as the quality will be poor.
Brushes Nylon brushes are best: I prefer to use filberts or the flat, square shapes, plus a fine detail brush.
Supports: e.g. your choice of hardboard or MDF or canvas/ canvasboard or stretched watercolour paper. MDF or hardboard will need a coat of primer (or matt household emulsion) first.
Water pot
Palette knife or painting knife
Small spray bottle: The sort sold in chemists for travellers.
Sponge: the car wash type, not the natural sort.
Kitchen roll
Newspaper: for protecting your worktop and for cleaning up.

Artist’s Profile Jackie Garner trained at Medway College of Design before becoming Nature in Art’s first education officer. She is now a professional artist who specialises in portraying wildlife, taking inspiration from encountering wildlife in its natural habitat.
Jackie teaches and lectures regularly, and is a contributor to Artists & Illustrators magazine. She has exhibited with many art societies, including the National Exhibition Wildlife Art, the Society of Wildlife Artists, BirdScapes Gallery, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and has held solo exhibitions in London and Gloucestershire. Jackie is the author and illustrator of The Wildlife Artist’s Handbook.

This course will include tuition on how to create an applique textile landscape, using raw edge and fusible applique. Different fabrics will be used to create texture and shading. The picture will include mountains, trees, tall grasses, rocks and a traditional white Scottish cottage nestled under the mountains.
You will work with my Kathleen’s own hand dyed cottons, viscose and scrim. Bought fabrics organza, viscose wadding and fusible web plus the pattern all supplied in a kit (extra cost of £10-00.)
You will be shown how to machine quilt and machine embroider the picture giving depth, perspective and texture to the finished scene. Hand embroidery can be used to enhance details if you wish.

Artist’s Profile Kathleen Matthews is an award winning quilter and textile artist. Author of Stitched Textile Landscapes published by Search Press, she has written many articles and projects for five magazines including Patchwork and Quilting and the embroiderer’s guild Stitch magazine. Kathleen’s quilts and pictures have been exhibited in England, Scotland, Wales and America. The Quilters Guild gave her a huge galley area at the Great British Quilt Festival at the N.E.C. Birmingham to display her work. The Embroiderers Guild asked her to stitch work for the Capability Brown Exhibition as an invited artist which then traveled around the country throughout 2016. Including Alexandra Palace London. Kathleen has also exhibited at Nature in Art on previous occasions.
Kathleen still lives in the Forest of Dean and studied at Lydney School of Art. Cheltenham Art College, Glos.C.A.T. and with the Japanese Embroidery School Kurenai-kai in Birmingham and Atlanta, America.

As Winter’s bite takes hold, all insects are hiding, riding out the extreme weather as either an egg, larva, pupa, or adult…….. Metamorphosis is one of the truly unique and magical phenomena in the natural world. So little is known about how it happens and yet, the result of each stage is a wonder to behold…..
This watercolour painting weekend will use art to pay homage to this incredible natural transformation. Cath and course participants will discuss how this mysterious process manifests itself, in butterflies and moths. Each fascinating stage of metamorphosis will be studied in all its beauty and wonder.
As with Cath’s other courses, each student will have access to their own high-powered microscopes, as well as her large selection of insect specimens and macro photos, to study the hidden beauty of this incredible process.
Participants will then use microscopes, specimens and macro photographs to produce a detailed and unique piece of art, paying homage to every stage of this amazing process…..from egg to adult!

Artist’s Profile Cath Hodsman is a skilled and widely acknowledged British wildlife and natural
history artist and an enthusiastic and encouraging tutor. She is also one of the most technically accomplished and accurate entomological (insects) artists – and as such, the Natural History Museum sells her work. Cath believes that, in order to pay homage to insects using art, it is necessary to capture their anatomical intricacy and she therefore strives for 100% accuracy.
To help conserve and preserve the future of insects, she works closely with many relevant organisations, such as the RHS, the Wetlands Trusts, the Wildlife Trusts and the National Trust.

This 2-day course is a wonderful introduction to the world of coloured pencil techniques.
Learn the art of layering different coloured pencil strokes to create the ‘realistic details’ of a Fox, using Derwent Coloursoft Pencils on a dark coloured Mount Board.
A line drawing will be provided to trace if you do not wish to draw the image free hand.

Artist’s Profile Karen is a self taught award winning coloured pencil artist and tutor, painting mostly wildlife subjects. She is a Gold Signature member of the UKCPS (United Kingdom Coloured pencil Society).
She exhibits nationally and has won many awards for her detailed pencil work. She runs regular workshops in the Pencil Museum, Keswick as well as many classes in Hampshire, where she currently lives.

Explore the mysteries behind the Collagraph Print on this 1-day course.
Learn how to make your own unique prints from plates created from mount card, which is incised with lines, collaged with paper and other textured mediums to create an exciting textured printing surface.
You will be shown how to prepare paper and how to ink up and wipe your plates ready for printing. The first part of the course will be spent making the plate and then the second will be spent printing in different ways to create your own unique print.

Artist’s Profile Tor is a prize winning printmaker, who shows her work both nationally and internationally.
Tor is interested in experimenting with new techniques, images and printing methods which allows her to challenge the boundaries of printmaking and enables her to produce the right marks and textures that relate to each subject matter.
Tor worked as a Printmaking tutor and technician at UCA, Maidstone, Kent, after finishing her degree. She later returned to achieve an Masters in Printmaking in 2010.
She now runs her own private printmaking courses from her studio in Worcestershire.

Glass fusing is joining two or more layers of glass through heating in a kiln.
There are several techniques that can be adapted to this basic principle some of which give surprising results. This 1-day course will teach some of those techniques alongside glass cutting (if you are new or in need of a refresher) and consist of glass layering, use of glass frits, powders and encapsulation between layers of glass.
The course will guide you in designing and
making either 4 glass coasters or a larger, flat piece of art glass. These will then be fired in a kiln and ready for collection after the course.

Artist’s Profile Sharon Foley began working with glass in 1999. She started making stained glass panels and quickly used lots of different processes to obtain various effects. Once she had acquired her own kiln she began experimenting with more 3-dimensional forms.
Sharon completed a Masters degree glass course at Wolverhampton University which gave her the freedom to use this transparent material in other ways. She now expresses her ideas by combining kiln formed glass with
other media.
