Migrations – A Field Study in Adversity: an illustrated talk by Derek Robertson £8 including finger buffet and access to galleries

Derek Robertson has been a professional artist for over 30 years and his paintings have won multiple national and international awards. He is also an enthusiastic amateur naturalist and bird ringer and has had papers published in many scientific journals. Derek will be talking about his most recent project ‘Migrations’ which ties together human rights issues of refugee crises and climate change through the imagery of migratory birds and their role as environmental indicators. Derek travelled and sketched through the UK, Europe and the Middle East drawing together imagery of birds and people as they negotiated borders, refugee camps and points of transit. An evening for all.

Migrations is on show at May 21st – June 23rd

Heart&Soul Community Choir

£6 including light snacks and access to museum and Wildlife Art Society exhibition

Under the inspirational leadership of Hilary Davies, Heart&Soul Community Choir will be lifting our spirits with a varied repertoire covering traditional and contemporary folk songs from the British Isles, South Africa, Bukino Faso and New Zealand (plus other gems). The emphasis is on the sheer joy and diversity of singing! Part proceeds in aid of Gloucestershire Action for Refugees and Asylum Seekers. An evening not to be missed!

Some of the world’s most beautiful butterflies are the swallowtails and birdwings, includes our own very localised British Swallowtail. Possibly the most beautiful, and certainly the largest in the world is The Queen Alexandra’s Birdwing Butterfly (Ornithoptera alexandrae), where females may have a 30cm wingspan. It is classed as Endangered by CITES and has a very restricted habitat. Examples are traded illegally for huge sums of money. Charles has lived and worked as a scientist in New Guinea, where the Queen Alexandra butterfly is found, and talks as both an expert and enthusiast for this amazing creature. An evening of natural history and conservation. Do come!

See for yourself exactly how Arthur became the most renowned King of England in this madcap, hilarious retelling of the legendary English story of The Sword in the Stone.

Following their phenomenal response from last year’s The Three Musketeers, IKP are back with another unique, tongue-in-cheek adaptation of a classic story. Excellent fun for all ages – with slapstick, physical humour, fast-paced multi-rolling, and a smattering of playful innuendo for the grown-ups, IKP’s The Sword in the Stone is an unmissable Outdoor Theatre treat this Summer.

Picnics welcome. There is no seating provided, so please bring something to sit on. This production is designed to be performed in the open-air and will continue in all safe weathers.

Norman Thelwell: Celebrated cartoonist and artist

An illustrated talk by Tim Craven

Tim Craven is an artist, former Curator at Southampton City Art Gallery and well known to Nature in Art. This talk traces the life, passions and artistic development of Norman Thelwell from his early years and formative wartime experiences to his subsequent rise to become one of the nation’s best known and loved cartoonists of his era. His works were full of beautifully observed detail and mainly of rural subjects, including country and leisure pursuits, sport, house sales and renovation, stately homes, gardening and sailing. Thelwell also was an early and passionate campaigner for the environment and a master of watercolour landscapes. A fascinating evening for all.

Preview Evening and Panel Discussion on the Fibonacci sequence by leading experts in different fields of interest.

Join us for the preview evening of Nature’s Code including a fascinating discussion surrounding the Fibonacci sequence. Alongside the exhibition, this panel discussion between experts from the fields of mathematics, music and art will dicuss and debate the sequence and how it relates to and intertwines these wide ranging subjects.

An illustrated talk by Jackie Garner
Jackie Garner takes us back to the times of the ancients, with images from her latest trip to Egypt. Take a glimpse into the tombs and temples and discover the variety of art styles that adorned the resting places from the workers to the wealthy. What links a 3500 year old tomb painting to a modern pop song? How do we know that Sennefer was a wine buff? Find out during this captivating talk. Jackie was our Education Officer at Nature in Art and is now an established and popular artist, speaker, tutor, guide and author. Her paintings have been shown on BBC television and are held in collections as far afield as the Falkland Islands, Trinidad, Australia and the USA.

The glowing colour of traditional slide film is the perfect medium in which to celebrate the beauty and variety of Gloucestershire. Historian and renowned lecturer Tim Porter shows some choice examples, and shares some thoughts on the glories of our local scene in this engaging talk. This glimpse of Gloucestershire will inspire and inform on many levels. The British Wildlife  Photography Awards will be open for viewing beforehand.

An evening of festive songs and carols to celebrate the Christmas season with the Heart of Gloucester Community Choir under the leadership of Monika Murrell. Our usual hearty finger buffet will include mince pies and mulled wine. An evening for all, partly in aid of mental health charities. Preceded by opportunity to view the galleries.
