Preview Evening and Panel Discussion on the Fibonacci sequence by leading experts in different fields of interest.

Join us for the preview evening of Nature’s Code including a fascinating discussion surrounding the Fibonacci sequence. Alongside the exhibition, this panel discussion between experts from the fields of mathematics, music and art will dicuss and debate the sequence and how it relates to and intertwines these wide ranging subjects.

Doors open 7pm to view the Nature’s Code exhibtion and other galleries. Talk starts at 8.00pm

An illustrated talk by Jackie Garner
Jackie Garner takes us back to the times of the ancients, with images from her latest trip to Egypt. Take a glimpse into the tombs and temples and discover the variety of art styles that adorned the resting places from the workers to the wealthy. What links a 3500 year old tomb painting to a modern pop song? How do we know that Sennefer was a wine buff? Find out during this captivating talk. Jackie was our Education Officer at Nature in Art and is now an established and popular artist, speaker, tutor, guide and author. Her paintings have been shown on BBC television and are held in collections as far afield as the Falkland Islands, Trinidad, Australia and the USA.

The glowing colour of traditional slide film is the perfect medium in which to celebrate the beauty and variety of Gloucestershire. Historian and renowned lecturer Tim Porter shows some choice examples, and shares some thoughts on the glories of our local scene in this engaging talk. This glimpse of Gloucestershire will inspire and inform on many levels. The British Wildlife  Photography Awards will be open for viewing beforehand.

Come and try your hand at some Christmas crafts, open to everyone, young and old!

An evening of festive songs and carols to celebrate the Christmas season with the Heart of Gloucester Community Choir under the leadership of Monika Murrell. Our usual hearty finger buffet will include mince pies and mulled wine. An evening for all, partly in aid of mental health charities. Preceded by opportunity to view the galleries.

An illustrated talk by Julian Hight
Come on a tour of Britain’s ancient forest told through its surviving ancient trees. From the wildwood, through working woodlands and royal forests, enclosed deer parks and landscaped manorial estates to modern plantation forestry and rewilding, this talk recounts the little told tale of an evolving landscape shaped by its wildlife, people and their relationship with trees – many of which survive as living links to Britain’s rich and ancient history. As well as being an ancient tree specialist and nature lover, Julian Hight is a designer, photographer and musician, so his talk will also feature original music written and recorded by him reflecting seasons in the forest, with forest sounds recorded through the year weaved in to produce a unique forest soundtrack.Copies of Julian’s latest book ‘Britain’s Ancient Forest, legacy and lore’, will be available on the night.Free access to the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition 7.00pm – 7.30pm. An illustrated talk by Jozette Khimba
The world is in climate and ecological crisis, not least because of what has become known as ecocide (large-scale systematic destruction of the natural living world) which is legally permitted. Current regulations simply do not stop the harm. The co-founder of StopEcocide, PollyHiggins, believed that the most effective way to see this trend reversed is to make ecocide an international crime, a proposal she presented to the UN Law Commission in 2010. Polly, an eminent lawyer who sadly died last Easter Sunday, spent the last decade making the word ‘ecocide’ globally understood by giving talks, advising governments and making documentaries. Along the way she inspired thousands, from parliamentarians to ecologists and from lawyers to artists. Her vision lives on and has more momentum than ever. Come and hear about this radical and innovative approach which could do for all life on earth what the criminalisation of genocide has done for vulnerable minorities: provide protection where none existed before.This talk complements our exhibition ‘Hit List’ that focuses on the theme of extinction. An illustrated talk by Robert Ferguson, co-founder & trustee of Explorers Against Extinction

On average, one elephant is poached in the wild every 26-minutes. This is the shocking statistic at the heart of Explorers Against Extinction, a conservation charity committed to raising awareness about threats to world wildlife and wild spaces while also raising significant funds to safeguard them. The charity’s innovative Sketch for Survival art initiative has funded frontline projects from Zimbabwe to Sumatra. Join Trustee Robert Ferguson as he explores how art inspires positive action and offers first-hand insight from the frontline of conservation, including the deployment of anti-poaching dogs and the evolving role of technology.

This event is in association with the Wildlife Art Society whose exhibition is on display May 23rd – 31st. Doors open at 7pm to view this exhibition (and the museum galleries)
