The course will cover the basics of macro photography of still subjects: basic optical principles, tripod work, macro stand work, illumination, and image stacking and processing. The aim is to show how to avoid the pitfalls which can degrade image quality in photographing small things and especially how to extend depth of field, the zone of acceptably sharp focus in the object space, which so limited macro photography in the pre-digital age. Do not be too daunted by the equipment notes, below. Whilst being a ‘technical’ field where many bits of kit can be useful in particular situations, much can still be accomplished with little kit, and those with a sound grasp of basic principles can extend their ‘operational capabilities’ as they feel inclined.

This two day course will show you how to sketch the landscapes and architecture of Gloucestershire with waterproof black ink pen and watercolour wash. Using photos supplied by the tutor you will be shown how to use the pen with watercolour paint both before and after painting.

Working in black & white and colour, the course will explore different ways of depicting trees in lino prints. We will be looking at different approaches for trees in leaf and bare trees, as well as stylised designs.
The course will look at how to use colour in your work and how to register your prints so that you can add different layers. A variety of different inking techniques will be taught.

Are you terrified of drawing but secretly long to learn how? Richard Box has an approach that will steady your nerves and build drawing ability and confidence. You will be amazed at what you will be able to draw by following his method. Because you are ‘terrified’ you will stay with a simple still life for the whole course. The main focus is in learning how to truly SEE what is often merely glanced. Once this is understood, you will be empowered to follow a number of procedures and techniques in both monochrome and colour. Thereafter, at home, you will be able to apply these to any subject you like.

Members of The Braid Society will demonstrate and introduce participants to various braiding techniques. These will include Kumihimo on Marudai and disc, Ply-Split braiding and cord making, Inkle/band weaving. During the day, you will be able to choose two different methods to learn or develop your skills to make a group of samples or a small piece of braided jewellery.
Special note for this course: As there will be more than one tutor on this course, the total number we can accommodate will be 20, but all the teaching of the different techniques will be done in groups of 5 – 10 people so, as with all our courses, there always will be plenty of individual attention.

This course explores the wonderful and versatile craft of glass engraving with a drill. It’s an opportunity for beginners to learn the basic techniques and for those who have attended a previous course to expand their skills. Over the two days we will discover three different techniques, starting with surface engraving, moving on to intaglio (low relief) engraving and also exploring vitreography – printing from your engraving onto paper. You will work on both flat glass and vessels and you will come away with at least one little masterpiece of your own making!

Course Description:
When is ink not ink? When it’s Acrylic Ink (it’s liquid acrylic paint, not ink). Explore this fascinating medium, which adds a whole new dimension to your acrylic practice. Discover the vibrant colours – glossy, iridescent, shimmering, pearlescent – and explore when and how to use. them in realistic and abstract art. We will experiment with different methods of applying the ink and cover working with layers of colour, wet into wet, detail and usage with other media. No prior knowledge of working with acrylic inks is necessary.
Materials Required:
• Acrylic Inks: Jackie will bring inks for the whole group, so there will be a materials charge of around £7 per person on the day. You are very welcome to bring your own inks too if you already own any.
• Palette: The ceramic daisy type are good and easy to clean. Or a plastic palette with a lot of small wells (NB: Inserts from boxes of chocolates can make good disposable palettes).
• Brushes: Don’t use expensive sables. Nylon brushes are best: I prefer to use filberts or the flat, square shapes. A selection of sizes and shapes (including a rigger or sword liner) are useful, though one large flat and one small detail brush will suffice if you’re on a budget. Jackie will bring some spares for students to use.
• Supports: Stretched watercolour paper OR a watercolour pad OR a watercolour block. A CP/Not (e.g. slightly textured) surface is best. Several A4 or A3 pieces will be better than one large. Jackie will also bring mountboard off-cuts for you to practice on.
• Water Pot
• Small spray bottle for water: The sort sold in chemists for travellers
• Sponge: The car wash type.
• Ruling Pen: Only if you already have one. No need to buy one specially.
• Kitchen Roll
