Come and join us at Nature in Art as we celebrate Earth Day. Throughout the day, there will be many activities to get involved with, from making insect hotels to feathery bird masks (+ much more). Family activities are linked to The Wild Escape, which is an initiative led by The Art Fund to engage young people with the UK’s natural environment through art. Activities will also relate to birds and to the theme of Earth Day 2023: Invest in our Planet.
JRCS Falconry will be joining us to show a magnificent selection of Birds of Prey. There will be short talks throughout the day and the opportunity to get close to these impressive birds. (Please note that this will be a static display). 11am – 4pm.
Also happening during the day: Take part in a scavenger hunt in the garden and enter the raffle. Artist, Trevor Smith, will be sketching the Birds of Prey and there will be a chance to learn how to draw a bird yourself. Don’t forget to bring your sketchbook!
Your entry to the family day also includes admission to the rest of the museum. Whilst you’re here, take the chance to visit ‘Secrets of the Studio’, an exhibition of the work of Elizabeth Gray who had a long association with Nature in Art. Also on show are select works (relating to predominantly British wildlife) from the Nature in Art Collection. There is also the opportunity to see a second artist at work: this week’s Artist in Residence, Philip Nelson, who specialises in decorative decoys. He will be working in the Artist’s Studio.
The coffee shop and gift shop will be open as usual.

Artist Elizabeth Gray, who had a long association with Nature in Art, and who also used the name Ben Venuto, died in 2022. We have been given access to her studio and will be assembling an exhibition highlighting the unique diversity of her output from April 18th – May 21st. Come and hear some extra insights into her work and inspirations that led to her enthusiasm for so many different styles and media, from painting, printmaking and decoupage to books, ceramics, drawings and more.
A really fascinating and uplifting evening.

7pm start followed by a look around the exhibition and a cup of tea/coffee. The talk will then be in the Education Centre. (Please note that there will be no food buffet)

This evening coincides with The Wildlife Art Society International’s (TWASI) exhibition. They have chosen Game Rangers International (GRI) as their charity this year. Sport Beattie is President and Founder of GRI who work in Zambia to empower rangers and local communities to conserve nature. Come and hear some inspiring real-life stories from the front-line of conservation. Part of proceeds in aid of GRI.

Through his exquisite, gentle and humorous cartoons from the 1950s, Norman Thelwell was ahead of the curve in his campaigning against pollution, factory farming and the wholesale destruction of rural habitat. Post-war, the British countryside was transformed from that of his beloved boyhood memory with the drive to produce more food through agricultural industrialisation. Thelwell would expose the unfortunate consequences of greed, lack of foresight and ignorance.
After a brief survey of his life and career for context, this talk will focus on one of Thelwell’s proudest and most satisfying achievements: his 1971 publication ‘The Effluent Society’, which was re-published this year – most pertinent to our times.

Two plays performed on the front lawn of Nature in Art by Tethered Wits, the premier open -air theatre company in the Cotswolds.

Coinciding with the first week of the British Wildlife Photography Awards (which can be viewed before the talk), this is a great opportunity to hear from a hugely experienced wildlife photographer. Despite having travelled to every corner of the globe, including a photography expedition to West Papua just before this talk, Helen has a particular passion for the wildlife and beauty of the UK. This talk will be prepared especially for Nature in Art drawing together many of her amazing wildlife photography experiences in the British Isles.

As part of Heritage Open Days 2023, there will be two talks held at Nature in Art on Friday 8th September.
Wallsworth Hall has a curiously obscure history. A fine Georgian mansion situated just north of Gloucester, it featured in Simon Jenkins’s acclaimed book ‘England’s 1000 Best Houses’. Since 1988 the hall has been the home of Nature in Art, the world’s first museum dedicated to art inspired by Nature. This talk by the Director, Simon Trapnell will provide a fascinating insight into the hall and the Nature in Art collection.
This talk will take place in the Education Centre, both at 11am and 3pm on Friday 8th September 2023.

Richard is a well known and engaging lecturer, author, tutor and regular artist in residence at Nature in Art.
‘Brutes, birds and all kind of beasties have, throughout history, been endowed with symbolic meanings, attributed to historical characters and have appeared in many myths and legends. This talk will illustrate examples of this with artistic representations from various cultures since history began’.

Haunted by the Last Tide is the collaboration between the Society of Wildlife Artists and the Vadehavet National Park to celebrate the wildlife, landscapes and people of the Danish Wadden Sea. Join writer, Colin Williams, and SWLA members Nik Pollard and Marco Brodde as they tell the story of the project and the wild and human life of the water marshes and sea.
Nik will introduce the evenings’ talk by giving a brief history of the society’s collaboration with conservation NGOs and how the society sees it’s role and the role of art in the protection of nature.
Marco, visiting from Denmark, and organiser of the Wadden Sea project, will talk about how an idea gew into two art residencies. three exhibitions and a stunning book celebrating the land and the nature in which he works and lives. A really fascinating talk bringing the best of wildlife art and conservation together.
This talk coincides with our exhibition ‘Sixty’, which is a unique display of 2D and 3D works celebrating the 60th anniversary of SWLA. There will be a chance to view this exhibition between 7 and 7:30pm.
