In this 2-day course you will learn how to create deep, vivid but clean colours without compromising the form of the plant. You will be able to say ‘goodbye’ to muddy colours, as Ann will show you how to choose accurate colours for layering and shading without losing the brilliance of the colour.
You will also learn in which order to apply techniques such as resist, underpainting and embossing and the importance of planning your approach to coloured pencil work.
By the end of the course you will be able to use the techniques demonstrated, to tackle
multiple coloured and textured plant material with confidence.

The aim of this 2-day course is to produce a triptych landscape, based on a photograph or sketch of your choice. Triptych is a popular format for depicting landscapes and will add dynamism to your work.
Liz will firstly teach you several methods of printing and you will be able to make print blocks to your own design. You will then have the chance to embellish your print with different types of stitch techniques. To finish, you will then have the option to add beads and other small objects to your piece.

This 2-day course will focus on the sketching, drawing and painting of birds, with the emphasis on working from life.
The course will cover topics such as basic sketching techniques, simple anatomy, and the use of watercolour in sketching. For the more ambitious, there will be the opportunity to have a go at sketching birds in flight, which is more of a challenge.
This course is aimed at a range of ability levels, with Trevor on hand to demonstrate particular techniques and to help you develop and improve your observational skills

Trevor’s deep interest in wildlife dates back to childhood and grew concurrently with a
desire to record the birds and animals he encountered on his visits to local nature
reserves and wild corners of Worcestershire.
Trevor has been teaching students the essentials of bird art for over twenty years now, but still get a kick from seeing people thrill to the subject and often surprise
themselves with hidden latent ability. He has also published a book Sketching Wild Birds in 2001 as a means of encapsulating my experiences of recording images from life.

On this 2 day course you will learn all about working with graphite pencil from experienced artist Jamie Boots.
Graphite pencil can be used to produce so much more than just a sketch.
Jamie will show participants that whether or not you are using a pencil that is blunt or sharp, pressing lightly or hard, or using a variety of tones, that the effect of fur, the texture of skin and the glassy look of an eye can be achieved.

You will be introduced to the basics of needle-felting, taught how to make a wire armature to form the basis of your sculpture and how to mould the wool to the frame.
You will be amazed how the wool sculpture seems to develop a character of its own. Once you have become confident in using the basic skills and techniques you are only limited by your imagination!

Glass fusing is joining two or more layers of glass through heating in a kiln.
There are several techniques that can be adapted to this basic principle some of which give surprising results. This 1-day course will teach some of those techniques alongside glass cutting (if you are new or in need of a refresher) and consist of glass layering, use of glass frits, powders and encapsulation between layers of glass.
The course will guide you in designing and making either 4 glass coasters or a larger, flat piece of art glass. These will then be fired in a kiln and ready for collection after the course.

Artist’s Profile
Sharon Foley began working with glass in 1999. She started making stained glass panels and quickly used lots of different processes to obtain various effects. Once she had acquired her own kiln she began experimenting with more 3-dimensional forms.
Sharon completed a Masters degree glass course at Wolverhampton University which gave her the freedom to use this transparent material in other ways. She now expresses her ideas by combining kiln formed glass with other media.

Learn how to create your very NeedleFeltHedgehog_(c)SophieBuckleyown felt hedgehog with expert needle felt and crochet artist Sophie Buckley.

Sophie has studied a degree in Contemporary Crafts, giving her a broad knowledge base in material, techniques, processes and 3D modelling. She soon discovered her love of working with natural fibres. Sophie is well known for her needle felt workshops, creating beautifully realistic felt animals including blue tits, butterflies and bees. Sophie will be running a special workshop to create felt hedgehog using special material to create a detailed hedgehog including realistic looking bristles. Sophie has excellent tutor knowledge and is keen to guide you through the creation of your very own felt hedgehog.

Exploring Wire Sculpture @ Nature in Art

Students will be expertly guided through the process of sculpting with the medium of wire be it galvanised, copper or coloured telephone cable.
Students can choose to keep it simple and create a 2D wire drawing, make a small bird or take on a bigger challenge and build a more complex sculpture.
On day 1 you will develop ideas through making a small ‘study’ sculpture and then start the foundations of your larger structure. On day 2 will you continue to add features and details.
Throughout the course you will learn about the different kids of recycled wires and where to source them for future projects.

Artist’s Profile
Celia Smith is an artist who draws with wire, as others draw with pencil. For her, creating sculptures out of wire is like drawing in three dimensions. Birds are her main inspiration; capturing their movement and character is her primary concern. She finds that wire has a spontaneity that can give her sculptures a feeling of life and energy.
The majority of Celia’s sculptures are of domestic and native British birds. She aims to capture not only their shape but also their movement and character.

During this 2-day course Stephen will teach you how charcoal and charcoal pencils compliment each other, so that intricate and subtle details can be achieved as well as the flowing expressive marks the medium is more commonly associated with.
Stephen will demonstrate how the use of various tools can help you control the charcoal allowing the creation of soulful and expressive eyes, deep soft fur, or any other texture you might wish to depict.
You will have the chance to re-create one of Stephen’s drawings and learn lots of those little things that go into the creation of a drawing. Stephen will also demonstrate techniques for transferring an outline onto paper for anyone that wishes to concentrate on achieving great tones and textures rather than struggle to get correct proportions.

Artist’s Profile
Stephen is an award winning artist who after ten years experience working in an art gallery has recently took the plunge to become a full time artist.
During his time at the gallery he curated and installed exhibitions as well as running workshops and courses for adults and children alike. He gleaned a great deal from all of these experiences.
Stephen has recently had his first book published, Counting Lions – Portraits From the Wild. With a foreword written by Virginia McKenna, who describes Stephen’s charcoal drawings as ‘Beautiful’. Stephen hopes this will be his first major step in aiding the wildlife he loves so much.
