On this 1-day course you will make Plant Climbers, Plant Supports, Trellises and decorative Garden Hurdles, all out of willow grown in Somerset and here in Gloucestershire.
Helen will guide you through each stage of the process, whilst introducing you to the different varieties of willow which you can use to make your creations unique.
By the end of the day you should have been able to make 3-4 items to take home to put in the garden.

Artist’s Profile Helen has been working with willow for over 20 years. She currently teaches at Waterperry and Highgrove and has done so in Steiner Schools and Further Education Colleges as well.
In recent years she has set up the Gloucestershire Arts and Crafts Centre based in Gloucester where county based artists and craftspeople can sell their work directly to the public on the High Street and pass on their skills through classes. Helen sells her work from her shop in 4 College Court, Gloucester.

What is abstract/expressionism? Have you wondered what it is like to paint like an abstract/expressionist? Then join Jonathan Newey on a journey of discovery using nature as a basis for abstraction and expressionism. Using sketches derived from exploring the outside world or from photographs and books Jonathan will help you understand how to produce a piece of work using nature as inspiration. Subjects and skills covered will include sketching with pen, pencil and paint; how to extract the shapes from reality, using colour to convey mood and atmosphere, and learn how artists such as Jonathan produce their own abstract work from nature. No previous experience is necessary, just a willingness to listen, learn, experiment and not worry about the end result.

Materials List 1 x A3 drawing paper sketch book (preferably spiral bound which is easier to work with)
Any felt tips, crayons, pastels etc that you can find at home.
The tutor will bring the same but there may not be enough for everyone.
Paint and paper or canvas for your finished painting: It is your choice what you use to paint your finished picture with.
The tutor will be using acrylic but you can also use watercolour, collage and/or acrylic.
The tutor suggests that whatever medium you choose, do the picture on a relatively large scale ie: at least A3 or 18 inches square (abstracts work well as a square format)
Bring brushes, paint, palette (paper plates will suffice) tissues or rag, paper or canvas.
Both acrylic and watercolour can be painted onto watercolour paper.
There really is no right or wrong materials to work with. Acrylic will be slightly easier than watercolour but the important thing is the act of sketching and painting rather than the end result.

Artist’s Profile Andrew has been associated with Nature in Art now for over twenty years. During that time he has run numerous courses and in 2016 completed his 16th annual week as Artist in Residence.
As a professional artist he works in a variety of media, including graphite pencil, pastel and Chromacolour (acrylic). He has recently had his first book published which details his techniques for painting birds in Chromacolour and is currently working on a new book drawing birds in graphite pencil.

This 1-day course is a wonderful introduction to the world of coloured pencil techniques.
Learn the art of layering different coloured pencil strokes to create the ‘realistic details’ of a Barn Owl, using Derwent Coloursoft Pencils on a dark coloured Mount Board.
A line drawing will be provided to trace if you do not wish to draw the image free hand.

During this course we will take inspiration from Nature in Art’s special exhibition of paintings of trees on display at the time and from the trees in the Nature in Art grounds. Over the two days we can immerse ourselves in the subject, exploring structure, texture, colour, shape and composition. Artist’s Profile Jackie Garner trained at Medway College of Design before becoming Nature in Art’s first education officer. She is now a professional artist who specialises in portraying wildlife, taking inspiration from encountering wildlife in its natural habitat.
Jackie teaches and lectures regularly, and is a contributor to Artists & Illustrators magazine. She has exhibited with many art societies, including the National Exhibition Wildlife Art, the Society of Wildlife Artists, BirdScapes Gallery, Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colours and has held solo exhibitions in London and Gloucestershire. This course will introduce the student to the art of origami (paper folding) to create natural forms & subjects from nature. Suitable for total beginners through to improvers, Tony will introduce students to, and explore with them, a wide range of origami techniques, styles and paper types and their application to the art. We will cover wet-folding, using foil & tissue-backed paper, craft papers, napkins, paper of different sizes, shapes and textures to suit the subject matter. Tony has a particular interest in “upcycling” paper products such as tourist leaflets, flyers, post cards etc. We will also cover using origami to make gift cards, decorations, scenes and pictures, and multi-piece or modular origami. Expect a hands-on and fun course and leave with a boxful of paper creations including animals, birds, fish, flowers, abstract and geometric forms and more.

Artist’s Profile Tony O’Hare is an origami artist living in Bristol, but originally from South Wales. He has folded paper since childhood, and is currently Chair of the British Origami Society (BOS). He has created hundreds of his own designs, of various subjects and had 4 booklets of his original work published by the BOS. Tony tends to focus on the natural world and subjects close to home, often with a humorous angle to them. Currently subjects are origami scenes of Bristol and associated subjects such as Wallace & Gromit. Tony’s origami motto is “Keep folding, Keep Smiling”.
Over the Bank Holiday weekend (27th -29th May) TWASI will be running a series of workshops taught by artist members.

Dragonflies and Damselflies are the biggest of British insects and also the most mystical. They are great survivors and date back as far as the dinosaurs. They are notoriously shy, but are skilled and ruthless hunters. In this water colour painting workshop, participants will have the chance to study and paint these beautiful creatures in much greater detail.
Cath and the course participants will discuss how these insect leviathans fly, hunt, reproduce and why they are so colourful and powerful. As with Cath’s other courses, each student will have access to their own high powered microscopes and specimens to study the anatomical beauty of these impressive insects.
Participants will then use a mix of microscopes, specimens and macro photographs to produce a detailed and unique painting.

Artist’s Profile Cath Hodsman is a skilled and widely acknowledged British wildlife and natural
history artist and an enthusiastic and encouraging tutor. She is also one of the most technically accomplished and accurate entomological (insects) artists – and as such, the Natural History Museum sells her work. Cath believes that, in order to pay homage to insects using art, it is necessary to capture their anatomical intricacy and she therefore strives for 100% accuracy.
To help conserve and preserve the future of insects, she works closely with many relevant organisations, such as the RHS, the Wetlands Trusts, the Wildlife Trusts and the National Trust.
