A unique selection of ceramics by a world renowned maker, Jill Fanshawe Kato. Jill explores many techniques including coiling, slabbing, sculpting, using moulds and throwing and altering. She regards her work, which is held in collections worldwide, as sitting somewhere ‘between sculpture and painting’.
The Wildlife Art Society International’s annual exhibition of wildlife art. Around 300 paintings, drawings, original prints, photographs and sculpture by professional and part-time members of this active organisation will be on display, the majority for sale. Members will be demonstrating throughout the exhibition. (Free access to this exhibition without visiting the museum).
During the Bank Holiday weekend (27th -29th May) TWASI will be running a series of workshops taught by artist members.

Art Course

Dragonflies and Damselflies are the biggest of British insects and also the most mystical. They are great survivors and date back as far as the dinosaurs. They are notoriously shy, but are skilled and ruthless hunters. In this water colour painting workshop, participants will have the chance to study and paint these beautiful creatures in much greater detail.
Cath and the course participants will discuss how these insect leviathans fly, hunt, reproduce and why they are so colourful and powerful. As with Cath’s other courses, each student will have access to their own high powered microscopes and specimens to study the anatomical beauty of these impressive insects.
Participants will then use a mix of microscopes, specimens and macro photographs to produce a detailed and unique painting.

Artist’s Profile Cath Hodsman is a skilled and widely acknowledged British wildlife and natural
history artist and an enthusiastic and encouraging tutor. She is also one of the most technically accomplished and accurate entomological (insects) artists – and as such, the Natural History Museum sells her work. Cath believes that, in order to pay homage to insects using art, it is necessary to capture their anatomical intricacy and she therefore strives for 100% accuracy.
To help conserve and preserve the future of insects, she works closely with many relevant organisations, such as the RHS, the Wetlands Trusts, the Wildlife Trusts and the National Trust.
Liz Brooke Ward is a contemporary stitched textile artist whose work is informed by the natural world. Her techniques have their roots in the traditions of embroidery and patchwork but she also uses digital and mixed media techniques to extend their boundaries.

On this 2-day course you will learn all about working with graphite pencil from experienced artist Jamie Boots.
Graphite pencil can be used to produce so much more than just a sketch.
Jamie will show participants that. whether or not you are using a pencil that is blunt or sharp, pressing lightly or hard, or using a variety of tones, the realistic texture of skin and the glassy look of an eye can be achieved.

Artist’s Profile Originally from New Zealand, Jamie is a renowned, but self taught, artist whose work is produced in graphite pencil. Jamie first exhibited his work in 2004 and has won a number of awards for his artwork.
In a very short period of time a hobby became a profession and with a limited number of originals being available each year his drawings have become highly collectable.
Art Course

Students will cut out clay tiles from pre-rolled clay, (clay will be pre rolled ready for the course so that it is at the correct firmness)
Using a white slip, students will coat the tile and this will be either be blow torched or left to dry whilst students enjoy their tea/coffee
Students will either scraffito first onto the clay and/or paint directly onto the clay tile using underglaze slips.
The theme of the image could be pets or any other image of bird or animal. A selection of images should be brought along to the course.
Finished tiles will be taken away, biscuit fired, glazed with a transparent glaze, fired again and returned to Nature in Art for collection

Form and colour dominates her work which is inspired by nature and her love of art history, (particularly late 19th century onwards). Claire has been teaching Art and Design, full time for the past nineteen years, but has recently become self-employed to enable her to focus on her own creativity. However, she enjoys teaching workshops in both two and three-dimensional media, in addition to working on commissions in either paint or clay.

Influenced by organic forms, students will create stoppered bottles using one of two techniques, slab building and/or coiling, working in stoneware clay.
Students will have a selection of organic forms available to influence their design. We will start the session with drawings, using a variety of drawing media, pens, pencils and charcoal. Students can bring their own drawing materials with them, including sketchbooks, but materials will also be available to use.
From the drawings created students will choose a design they wish to translate in clay. Advice will be given as to which technique would better suit the building in clay.
Students when they have completed the form will add white slip onto the vessels on areas they would like glaze added in a colour of their choice. (Glaze examples will be brought to the class so choices of colour can be made). Stoppered bottles will then be biscuit fired, glazes added and fired to stoneware and returned to Nature in Art for collection.

The 2-day course will focus on botanical painting, giving you the opportunity to work with alternative mediums such as gouache or acryl gouache. Taking the course in watercolour is also available if you would prefer to stick to a familiar medium.
Throughout this course you will be guided in colour mixing, botanical accuracy and the most important skills to gaining three dimensional forms to botanical studies.
This course is open to all levels but a precise rather than loose style of painting will be required.

Scraperboard is a method of creating a tonal picture by scratching through a layer of black Indian ink to reveal a white chalk layer beneath. In some ways it is similar to drawing, except the white is scratched from the black.
We will explore the techniques that can be used to make marks and scratch out detail.
We will also cover different types of scraperboard and scratchboard, including how to make your own and the different ways board can be coloured after scratching.

Artist’s Profile Jackie is a self-taught artist, and believes that she inherited her artistic talent from her
grandparents, both of whom were freelance illustrators. She became an artist in 1984 and began portraying animals in pastels.
She started teaching in 2001 and exhibits
regularly with the Feline Art Society. She has won awards for her scraperboard work.
