This year we are pleased to be able re-introduce a crafts display by some renowned British makers. Rather than having a particular media focus or narrow theme, this show embraces work in a variety of media by acknowledged experts in their field. Amongst the makers included are Katie Morgan (ceramics), Robert Cox (woodwork), Jill Fanshawe Kato (ceramics), Amanda Lawrence (glass), Tony White (ceramics), Stella Campion (silver), Patricia Northcroft (sculpture), Sharon Foley (glass), Paul Hannaby (wood turning), Sue Brown (collagraphs), Liz Brooke-Ward (textiles), Michael Lythgoe (wood sculpture), Carole Bury (mixed media), Jane Spray (ceramics), Michael Fairbairn (glass) and Linda Heaton-Harris and Suzie Marsh (both ceramic sculpture).

This exhibition is on display in our Education Centre. It was due to end on 21st November, but has been extended by popular demand (NB: There may be restricted access at times during the extra week.)
This is an exhibition of banners on the theme of our responsibility and care for the world, timed to coincide with COP26 in Glasgow.
All are made by people from the community, from WI’s, craft groups, churches and the like wanting to explore the theme creatively. Liz Robertson who coordinated the project says ‘the environmental and global climate emergency afflicting our world has been well-documented. Indeed, even in our own gardens or favourite green spaces there have been changes in recent years: habitats have shrunk and affected the numbers of our precious wildlife; Summer seems to arrive earlier each year, often to peter out when it should be in full swing; and pollinators often seem scarce.’
Covid’s global impact has given further food for thought. Liz says ‘All the banners contain messages of warning and hope. Hope seemed to be a key criteria for the banners; it’s easy to become disillusioned about how we, as individuals, can affect the global environmental and climate issues. What can one person do? Well, many of our banner-makers have considered this, which gives us hope. What can one nation do? With the upcoming UN COP 26 Climate Conference, nations will come together to take a serious stock of the situation, make resolutions and, hopefully, follow through. Hope in the face of crisis. You will notice a repetition of four words, as you view the banners: destruction, restoration, care and beauty. Something for us all to think about?’
A Dare to Dabble workshop, inspired by the banners is being held on 17th November.

Course Description:
This course will cover a basic understanding of. materials and acrylic painting techniques needed to complete a landscape painting working from a reference photo provided by the tutor. The next stage will be to study aerial and linear perspective, techniques needed to paint skies and colour mixing to create depth in the landscape. All the way through the course Nick will lead the painting and provide plenty of individual guidance leading to completing a finished landscape on a canvas panel by the end of the course.
Materials Required:
All materials will be provided for the cost of £10 per person payable directly to Nick during the course.

Nick has been teaching acrylics and watercolour for approximately 30 years. He provides workshops and demonstrations for art societies and hold regular workshops at Dumbledon Hall Hotel. Nick regularly sells work. in exhibitions and is a member of TWASI (The Wildlife Art Society International)

Course Description:
Capturing drama in art is the secret to its success – harnessing lowlights, highlights and texture help create mood as well as realism. For this workshop Cath will take students on a journey that focuses on these important elements.
Each student will complete a beautiful and detailed graphite sketch of a solitary bee.
Students will also learn about the fascinating life cycle of solitary bees, that make up 90% of the UK’s collective bee species. About how solitary bees make much more effective pollinators than both honey bees and bumble bees and how creating habitat and nesting sites and material for solitary bees is easy and fun to do…involving anything from rotten wood to empty snail shells!

Artist’s Profile:
Cath Hodsman, AMRSB, is a Cotswolds-based artist and illustrator who is one the the country’s foremost natural-history artists. Her passion and specialism is painting and sketching insects, which she has done for the last 10 years. In order to pay homage to their hidden beauty, she aims for 100% anatomical accuracy in every artistic study she produces. Through her scientific approach to her work, she has been made an Associate Member of the prestigious Royal Society of Biology. She is also well known for her ever-popular and unique insect painting and sketching course – With these she has taught with the illustrious London’s Natural History Museum, The Royal West of England Academy, The Royal Horticultural Society, The Royal Botanic Gardens (Kew), The Field Studies Council, as well as many other relevant , esteemed artistic and natural history clientage and venues; including The Queen’s Gallery, Buckingham Palace.

Course Description:
This course is a wonderful introduction to the world of coloured pencil techniques. Learn the art of layering and blending coloured pencil whilst using different pencil strokes to create the textures required for the subject. A line drawing to trace will be provided for those not wishing to draw free hand.

All materials will be supplied free of charge to use during the course.
Artist’s Profile:
Karen is a self taught award winning coloured pencil artist and tutor, painting mostly wildlife subjects. She is a gold member of the UKCPS (United Kingdom Coloured Pencil Society).
She exhibits nationally and has won many awards for her detailed pencil work. She runs regular courses in the Pencil Museum, Keswick and Nature in Art, as well as many classes in Hampshire where she currently lives.

Stunning images unveiled as Wildlife Photographer of the Year arrives at Nature in Art
This world-renowned exhibition, on loan from the Natural History Museum in London, features exceptional images which capture fascinating animal behaviour, spectacular species and the breath-taking diversity of the natural world. Using photography’s unique emotive power to engage and inspire audiences, the images shine a light on stories and species around the world and encourage a future of advocating for the planet.
Wildlife Photographer of the Year is the most prestigious photography event of its kind, providing a global platform that showcases the natural world’s most astonishing and challenging sights for over 55 years. Launching in 1965 and attracting 361 entries, today the competition receives over 50,000 entries from all over the world, highlighting its enduring appeal.
This exhibition, facilitated by the Independence Trust, is by artistically-minded Gloucestershire folk whose lives have been affected by mental health struggles, including during Covid. The outlet of visual expression in 2 and 3 dimensions has in itself been a form of light. Much of the work will be for sale and ranges from the panoramic to the petite.

To accompany the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition, join photographer Helen Mugridge ARPS on a month long adventure in the South Atlantic. Her journey begins in Ushuaia in Southern Argentina and then covers South Georgia and finally the Antarctic Peninsula, and the stunning wildlife that she encountered along the way.
This talk will take place online via Zoom.
An inspiring selection of work by members of the Gloucestershire Society for Botanical Illustration. Some exhibitors have won The Royal Horticultural Society’s Gold, Silver Gilt and Silver Medals both in the Grenfell (for art pictures) and Lindley (for scientific illustration) categories. GSBI was awarded the Finnis Scott Foundation Botanical Art Award in 2020.

Course Description:
This is a course for all abilities who have an interest in learning, to paint wildflowers, plants and weeds in their natural habitat.
It could be a corner of a garden which inspires you, a field full of wildflowers, a landscape, anywhere where plants live in their natural habitat and are in their abundance. Anywhere, where their energy and beauty dominate the landscape and where the human footprint is at a minimum.
Materials Required:
Participants will need to bring their own tools and materials to work with including paint brushes, their chosen medium (either gouache, acrylic or oil paint) and ground (paper, board or canvas). Participants must also bring in photographs of what they wish to paint.
Artist’s Profile:
Ros has been painting the natural world for decades. Her aim through her work is to combine truth to the real plants and places, combined with the variety and energy found there.
She is drawn to complex plant relationships where they grow naturally in the wild. It is their beauty and uniqueness that inspires her.
